Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA)

An analogue telephone adapter is a device that connects to your broadband modem or network and turns your current ordinary telephone into a VoIP phone. It allows you to stick with the telephone you know and love while using a VoIP telephone service to reduce the cost of your telephone calls. Once installed you won't even know it is there – until your telephone bill arrives.

The alternative to an ATA is a VoIP phone; but in many cases ATAs offer a more flexible solution especially when using wireless telephones.

Many ATA devices offer a bypass that allows you to use the traditional telephone network; many automatically do this if this if the internet connection is not available for some reason. Some also allow incoming calls from to normal telephone number to be presented on the same phone.
