Cannot Connect

While Articulation is attempting to connect, a red and green plug will be shown - if the connection is made two connected green plugs will be shown with domain name shown in the status area.

If Articulation cannot connect it will show an unconnected red plug at the top of the screen, with a message in the status area below.

The following sections describe the problem and action to take if you encounter the following messages:

If the message you are seeing is not listed above please contact us

Not Registered | No service configured

When there are no account settings Not Registered will be shown in the status area. This means that Articulation is not registered with a VoIP provider; when in this mode you will only be able to make calls by entering a SIP URI (that is in the form of user@host). You will be able to make Test calls using the options on the Call menu.

In order to make calls to other users and/or normal telephone lines, you need to sign up with a VoIP provider and enter the account details that provider gives you into the Account settings form accessed from the Options menu.

Click here for a list of providers that Articulation has been tested with.

Network Down

This is message is shown when Articulation cannot open the network library. This will be due to incorrect or incomplete network settings for your Palm device. You can change those setting by selecting the Network... option from the Options menu.

Refer to our guide to connecting your PDA to the internet.

Request Timeout | No response from server

This message is displayed when Articulation has been sending requests to your VoIP service but has not received any responses.

Take the following steps:

  1. Check the server setting that you entered under Account Settings... is correct. If your provider has given you a SIP port number that is not 5060, append this number preceded with a colon to the server; for example, fwdnat.pulver.com:5082.

  2. If you are using an internet service provider, check that your device is connected to the internet properly - you can try this by using the Web browser application to connect to our website http://www.hamptonsoftware.co.uk. If this does not work then you need to check your network settings; you may need to consult with the manual for your PDA.

  3. If you are connecting to a SIP server on a LAN, try entering the server's IP address instead of its name.

  4. Try 'pinging' your server from your PDA to ensure you can connect to the server. You can download a freeware application to perform the ping. If you cannot ping the server then there is probably a problem with your PDA network settings.

Often when connecting to the internet your PDA will connect through a NAT (Network Address Translation) router. This can cause problems for some VoIP applications. In order for Articulation to work through NAT, your VoIP provider must either have a NAT aware SIP server, or a SIP server that supports RFC 3581. If you have a symetric NAT router it is possible that Articulation will not be able to communicate with your service provider.
Some service providers provide an alternative server address to allow communication through NAT; for example, the Free World Dialup service offers the fwdnat.pulver.com:5082 server as an alternative to fwd.pulver.com.

Some VoIP servers (e.g. Microsoft Live Communications Server) only support SIP over TCP; Articulation only supports SIP over UDP. Articulation will not work with servers that do not support SIP over UDP.

Incorrect user/password | Unauthorized | Forbidden (or similar)

This means that your VoIP service provider has rejected your account details. Check that the domain, user name and password is correct in the Account Settings... form.

If the settings are correct, please check with your VoIP provider that your account has been enabled.
